01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set in a quiet pocket of Asakusa, Jūroku offers an unhurried evening course built around handmade soba and painstakingly prepared Japanese dishes. One of the highlights is the generous assortment of appetizers and hassun served as soba-mae, the small plates traditionally enjoyed alongside sake before the noodles arrive. Seasonal seafood and dashi-forward compositions arrive in rhythmic succession. Along with fragrant toasted soba miso and fluffy rolled dashi omelet, surprises such as remarkably tender deep-fried pork fillet cutlet punctuate the progression, reaching well beyond standard soba-shop fare.
During colder months, the special course centering on a duck and water dropwort hotpot draws particular acclaim. Thick yet tender slices of duck yield rich flavor, while fresh Japanese parsley cuts through the concentrated broth, keeping each bowl savory without turning heavy. The restaurant is also known for thoughtful sake pairings, and sharing your preferences often leads to pleasant discoveries among less common labels.
The soba that concludes the meal is carefully crafted to highlight the clean aroma of grain and a pleasant, resilient bite. Whether woven into earlier courses or presented at the end as a chilled bowl accented with sudachi citrus, the interplay between noodles and broth maintains interest right through the final course.
The interior evokes a serene traditional Japanese residence, appointed with counter seats as well as private rooms. Dinner is best planned with an advance reservation.
